simp. and trad. alternative forms 𠄔眩

Jiajie (假借), but of what is unclear:

  • Variant of 玄 (OC *ɡʷeːn) with an elongated stroke to distinguish (Ji Xusheng).
  • Abbreviation of 縣 (OC *ɡʷeːn, *ɡʷeːns) (He Linyi).

Shuowen mistakes it for an inversion of 予 (OC *la, *laʔ) based on its seal script form. This misinterpretation has produced the variant form 𠄔 through liding (隸定). This variant is sometimes mistakenly presented as evidence of the character’s origin in popular media.

Kanji in this term 幻 まぼろしGrade: S kun’yomi

Probably from Old Japanese. Used in The Tale of Genji, completed in 1021.[1][2]

The initial ma is almost certainly (ma, modern me, “eye”). The boroshi portion is of uncertain derivation, possibly related to modern colloquial adjective ぼろい (boroi, “rough, ragged, worn-out”), verb ばらす (barasu, “to mess something up”), or adjective 朧(おぼろ) (oboro, “hazy, cloudy”).
