According to Shuowen, a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *qrɯm): semantic 阜 + phonetic 侌 (yīn).
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r(u/i)m (“dark; shade; dusk; twilight”); compare Tibetan རུམ (rum, “darkness”), Jingpho rim (“to be dusk”) (Benedict, 1972; Bodman, 1980; STEDT).
