Pictogram (象形): a pipe — original form of 筒 (OC *doːŋ, *doːŋs, “pipe”). 口 was added later to mark the opening and prevent confusion.

In early forms, 同 (tóng) and 凡 were distinguished not by the presence of 口, but by symmetry: 同 (tóng) is symmetrical, while 凡 (fán) has its right stroke sweeping outward.
