simp. and trad. alternative forms 仅

Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): (“person”) + (“hand”) or ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): (“person”) + (“hand”) – to deliver, to give to someone.

  1. to give; to deliver; to hand over
  2. (transitive) to pay
  3. to entrust
  4. alternative form of (“a pair; a set; a classifier for facial expressions”)
  5. a surname
  • (to pay):
  • (antonym(s) of “to pay”):

For pronunciation and definitions of – see 傅 (“teacher; instructor; to assist; etc.”).(This character is the second-round simplified form of 傅).Notes:

  • Simplified Chinese is mainly used in Mainland China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
  • Traditional Chinese is mainly used in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

付 was included as the simplified form of 傅 (fù) in the second round of simplification in 1977. The current standard in Mainland China, the Table of General Standard Chinese Characters (通用规范汉字表), does not mention that 付 is a simplification of 傅 (fù). A Dictionary of Current Chinese (现代汉语词典) and the Xinhua Dictionary (新华字典) list 付 as a separate entry from 傅 (fù) (unlike other variants, which are usually put beside the main character in parentheses) and define 付 as a common variant for 傅 (fù), while Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian (《现代汉语规范词典》) proscribes the use of 付 as the simplified form of 傅 (fù).

Similar to the surnames 肖 and 蕭/萧, the surname (fù) and 傅 were also originally distinct, and (fù) was originally a rare surname. The modern surname (fù) is mostly due to second-round simplification of Chinese characters.

For pronunciation and definitions of – see 副 (“subsidiary, auxiliary; sub-; vice-; auxiliary position; deputy officer; etc.”).(This character is the second-round simplified and variant form of 副).Notes:

  • Simplified Chinese is mainly used in Mainland China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
  • Traditional Chinese is mainly used in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
