My friend Văn introduced me to this dish recently and I am obsessed. I’ve eaten at a half dozen places in the past month and have NO REGRETS.
These are the Chinese versions of steamed rice flour rolls stuffed with yummy meats, and very close cousins of a couple Vietnamese dishes (bánh cuốn nóng and bánh ướt), but come swimming in a different sauce and with a wide variety of fillings beyond pork, mushrooms, and shrimp.
These fillings can range from scallops to prawns to bbq pork, beef, or eggs, and folks, this is next level comfort food. Fortunately, there are a few really great options to go for this special dish. In addition, it’s always freshly made to order and cheap as hell!
Check out my three favorites below.

A delightful option in District five, this is fast, cheap, and great for a light meal or a snack (although they are closed in the afternoon – please note the hours). No AC but there are fans and it was relatively cool even at lunchtime. It seemed constantly busy on my visit, and rightfully so.
The rolls are slightly chewy and there are a ton of options for fillings. Everything is freshly made to order and they don’t come drenched in the sauce, but rather there are small bowls and sauce on the side for dunking. Still excellent.
(We were so hungry we dug in before I remembered I needed pics, sorry!)

Absolutely my favorite of the bunch today. The shop is humming with customers and they have the most interesting selection of fillings – including scallops and a Chinese donut filled with shrimp and deep fried. We just kept ordering more because they were so good and cheap.
Service is great and food came out remarkably quickly. Although this small shop is a bit far from the city center it is definitely worth the trip out. You won’t regret it.
If you’re looking for something a little different, consider this classic comfort dish – soft, chewy, sweet, savory, and easy to eat, it’s sure to become a go-to for when you need something a little different.
